Similac, Alimentum and EleCare Baby Formula Bacteria Contamination
Abbott Nutrition announced a voluntary recall of three types of powdered baby formula:
· Similac
· Alimentum
· EleCare
All of the formulas affected are powdered. Liquid formulas are not affected.
Why is there a baby formula bacteria recall in 2022?
Abbott Nutrition has voluntarily recalled batches of its powered formula because of a risk of bacteria contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received four complaints of infant illness in three states that may be related to the formula. All four of the infants were hospitalized; one died.
Medical reports state that the infants contracted two bacterial infections – Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Newport. Cronobacter sakazakii causes sepsis and severe meningitis. In infants, it can cause seizures and long-term neurological problems. Medical professionals say that the mortality rate in infants may be as high as 40%. Salmonella Newport causes gastrointestinal illness and fever.
What baby formula is part of the 2022 bacteria recall?
Baby formulas that are part of the recall are:
- Similac, Alimentum and EleCare products, manufactured by Abbott Nutrition
- Powdered formulas only (not liquid formulas)
- Manufactured in Sturgis, Michigan
- Have an expiration date of April 1, 2022 or later
- Have a product code that starts with numbers from 22-37
- Contain K8, SH, or Z2 in the product code
The product code is located on the bottom of the container. Products were distributed in the United States and abroad.

About the 2022 Abbott Nutrition Formula Recall
Abbott Nutrition admits that Cronobacter sakazakii was found in testing at its production facility. They deny that the bacteria appeared in testing for any of its distributed products. The FDA says that, because formula is the sole source of nutrition for many infants, they are “deeply concerned” by the possibility that some formulas may have been contaminated. Cronobacter is especially dangerous because of its ability to survive on dry products like baby formula.
